The movie “Open Range” is a 2003 western directed by and starring Kevin Costner. It was based on the novel “The Open Range Men” written by Lauran Paine. The film takes place in Montana and stars Robert Duvall and Annette Bening. The story follows two cowboys, played by Costner and Duvall, who are forced to fight back against an evil landowner after they refuse his demand to move their cattle off of his land. It’s one of my favorite movies, so I highly recommend checking it out!

Robert Duvall (Boss Spearman)
Robert Duvall stars as Boss Spearman in Open Range. He’s an experienced cowboy who has worked on many ranches and knows the land well. As the film progresses, he proves to be a powerful adversary for Open Range’s villain. Open Range is one of Duvall’s more popular films, so if you enjoyed it I recommend checking out some of his other movies like The Apostle or Lonesome Dove. Open Range also stars Kevin Costner, Annette Bening, Michael Gambon, and Chris Cooper.
Kevin Costner (Charley Waite)
Kevin Costner plays Open Range’s main protagonist, Charley Waite. Although he has a more experienced friend named Boss Spearman who feels responsible for him, Waite is the one who carries Open Range throughout its entirety. He’s a skilled gunman and knows how to handle a cattle drive – but his inexperience makes him vulnerable to Open Range’s villain.
Annette Bening (Sue Barlow)
Annette Bening plays Sue Barlow in Open Range, the love interest of Open Range’s protagonist. Her husband was killed during an Indian attack on their home several years ago, and she has since lived alone with her son. She cares deeply for Charley Waite and loves him like family, which makes Open Range’s villain hold a grudge against her.
Michael Gambon (Denton Baxter)
Michael Gambon is Open Range’s primary villain, Denton Baxter. Baxter owns the land Open Range’s protagonist drives their cattle on, and wants to force Charley Waite off, so he can build a railroad there. He has no regard for Open Range’s lives or the lives of anyone around him, and Open Range’s characters must make him pay for his actions.
Micheal Jeter (Percy)
Micheal Jeter plays Percy in Open Range. Percy is a hired gunman under the employ of Open Range’s villain, and he is responsible for killing two of Open Range’s main cast members.
Diego Luna (Button)
Diego Luna plays the character of Button in Open Range. Button is a slave owned by Frank Towles, and he assists him in doing his dirty work. Button isn’t afraid to get his hands bloody either – Open Range’s cast has no mercy for Frank Towles’ character after they discover what he’s done.
James Russo (Sherrif Poole)
James Russo plays Sheriff Poole in Open Range. Sheriff Poole is the harsh local sheriff in Open Range, and he’s a loyal friend to Open Range’s protagonist. He protects Open Range from any threats that come their way throughout the film. Although he has a reputation for being intimidating, the viewer finds out that this isn’t always true.
Abraham Benrubi (Mose)
Abraham Benrubi plays Mose, a friend of Daily from Open Range. Mose becomes a main cast member in Open Range, and helps Daily during his fights throughout the movie. He’s a slower individual who likes to think before acting – but when he does act, it’s always for the betterment.
Dean McDermott (Doc Barlow)
Dean McDermott plays Doc Barlow in Open Range. Doc Barlow is the brother of Open Range’s main cast member, and he is also the husband of Open Range’s primary love interest Sue Barlow. He is an experienced doctor who helps Open Range throughout their journey, but his lack of experience with violence puts him in danger at certain points.
Kim Coates (Butler)
Kim Coates is Butler in Open Range. Butler is a member of Open Range’s cast, and he grows close to Mose throughout the movie. Butler is one of Open Range’s primary cast members, and his loyalty to his friends can be counted on when it truly matters.
