Open Range – Kevin Costner

Kevin Costner plays Charley Waite in the 2003 movie Open Range. The character is both a talented gunman and, confusingly enough, an open range cattleman.

When the movie begins, Charley has been illegally running his cattle on “open range” in Montana, meaning he doesn’t have to feed or water them for a certain number of days. He’s got about 10,000 head chronicled in his pocket book, and he can’t afford to pay for their care.

The local sheriff confiscates the cattle, and then returns them when his rich friend who runs the bank (and wants Charley’s votes) asks him to. The cattle now belong to the bank, not Charley, which means they’re no longer open range.

The sheriff doesn’t care about this little detail though – he just tells Charley it has everything to do with his votes and nothing to do with his cattle.
